A fresh check in unusually choice condition, rare in this quality. Jefferson Davis was the only president of the Confederate States of America, serving from Feb 18th, 1861 until May 5th, 1865.

Both before and after his position in the Pierce administration, he served as a U. Senator for the state of Mississippi. Following his resignation from the United States Senate, on February 18. 1861, he was selected as the provisional president of the Confederate States.

The following November he was elected, without opposition, to a six-year term. During his presidency he took charge of the Confederate war plans. He failed to develop a coherent strategy to challenge the more powerful Union and was unable to secure recognition from any foreign country. Historians have judged him a much less effective a leader than Lincoln. He was viewed as overbearing and meddlesome and lacking a sensitivity to public opinion. He was captured by Union forces on May 10. Subsequently he was charged with treason but he was not tried.

He was released from prison after two years and prohibited from running for public office. Note - Union & Planters Bank checks. The Union & Planters Bank was founded in 1869, and the former Confederate President, U. Secretary of War was one of its first depositors. According to bank records, Davis wrote only 115 checks on this account.
