Superb 1938 autographs of Bomber legends Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio here. Light yellow album page has two high quality signatures in blue fountain pen of The Iron Horse and the Yankee Clipper, perfectly aligned to display for posterity.
The page measures 4.25 x 5, with an irregular top edge and a horizontal fold towards the bottom from a previous mat and frame job. Typed notation from 80 years ago taped to the extreme lower portion of the album page. The back is clean, with no writing. Gehrig's signature rates a 9+ of 10, with Joltin' Joe's being at least an 8/10. The unique aspect of this signed item is the fact that whoever was fortunate to obtain Lou and Joe's autograph, JUST GOT LOU AND JOE, right above and below each other.
No Tommy Henrich, George Selkirk or Frank Crosetti. Didn't even try to add Bill Dickey or Lefty Gomez. Just get the signatures of two of the greatest ballplayers of the era (and all-time), Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Back then, almost always, an autograph collector would seek out to acquire as many team members on a page, or in his book as possible.
This was a very astute move on the original owner's part, clearly planned ahead of time. I have been doing this stuff for nearly forty years and have never seen Gehrig's and DiMaggio's signatures so evenly orchestrated together on an autograph book page, done in ink. Think about it, there was a relatively short window to put it all together...... With Lou's deteriorating health in early 1939, he was not as relaxed and accessible to fans during Spring Training, confounded and down trying to figure out what exactly was wrong with his body.Sadly, it turned out to be ALS, ending his brilliant career soon after and claiming his life in 1941, just short of 38 years old. The condition of the page is Very Good, with very high quality, well-formed signatures. There are both scans and iPhone images above of the autographs. They are even nicer in hand than my photos make them appear.
Riginally framed up with a nice black and white photo of the pair in the dugout, taken in 1938. Be sure to check out the two other authentic Gehrig signed items I currently have listed. Lou Gehrig interesting stat: he had 7 years with 150 or more RBI; not even Babe Ruth did this. Joe DiMaggio interesting stat: played 13 seasons with the Yankees; won 9 World Championships. This desirable signed page is guaranteed 100% authentic, and. Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA.
